Actin Filament Networks

The Actin filament cytoskeleton plays many and diverse roles in cellular function. Static high-resolution views of actin filaments in epithelial cells obtained through electron microscopy have been combined with dynamic low-resolution views of actin filaments in live cells to uncover mechanisms underlying single cell migration. How actin filament networks contribute to the morphology and function in more complicated cellular systems is unknown. We are currently applying the techniques and lessons learned from studying single migrating cells to epithelial cellular mono-layers
